Glucose

Recent studies show that a new drug improves glucose and lipids in diabetes.  An investigational drug called ragaglitazar delivers a double benefit for people with type 2 diabetes:  it controls blood glucose while it improves the lipid profile, researchers report.  The study appeared in the June 2004 issue of Diabetes Care.  (7/04)

Insulin

Recent studies show that a short course of insulin therapy may help people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes avoid this therapy later.  The new findings, which appear in the May 2004 medical journal Diabetes Care are based on a study of 16 patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes who were treated with intensive insulin therapy for 2 to 3 weeks.  At 1-year follow-up, only one patient required insulin, while the rest were able to control their sugar levels with diet or pills.  (7/04)
