Diabetes Risk Factors
Type 1 Diabetes
Other possible risk factors:
- Viral exposure
- Low Vitamin D levels
- Other dietary factors
Type 2 Diabetes
You have a higher risk for diabetes if you have any of the following:
- Age greater than 45 years
- Diabetes during a previous pregnancy
- Excess body weight
- Family history
- Given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
- HDL cholesterol under 35 mg/dL
- High levels of triglycerides
- High blood pressure
- Impaired glucose tolerance
- Low activity level
- Metabolic Syndrome
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Persons from certain ethnic groups, including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans have a higher risk for diabetes.
Gestational Diabetes
Any woman can develop gestational diabetes, but some are at greater risk.
- Age greater than 25
- Family or personal health history
- Excess weight
- Nonwhite race
