Who We Are
Who We Are

We are community health nurses, consumers, physicians, insurers, health educators, administrators, planners, pharmacists, and representatives of labor, industry, and governmental and voluntary agency health education programs.  We were organized in 1978 as the Maine High Blood Pressure Council and subsequently have expanded our concerns to include the reduction of elevated cholesterol and other risk factors for heart attacks and strokes.  This led to a change in name to Maine Cardiovascular Health Council in November 1989.

We are an incorporated nonprofit health agency, governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership and supported by modest grants, membership dues, educational workshops, and annual meeting registrations.  We make no fund raising appeal to the general public.

How We Work
The council has expert working groups around each of the cardiovascular risk factors of hypertension, lipids, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and diabetes.   In addition, the Community Programs, Advocacy, and Education Committees provide direction for our yearly work plan.

Members are strongly urged to volunteer their expertise with any of the working groups or committees of the Council.  This participation is critical for achieving a coordinated system for CVD risk reduction throughout Maine.
