for Self Care of Chronic Diseases
John Martin's Manor, Waterville, Maine
Opportunities to address behavior change occur in nearly every
patient encounter. Typically, we adopt a "fix-it" role
and provide information and advice to patients about unhealthy
behaviors. Knowledge alone is insufficient to motivate most
patients to change. To address the shortcomings of the
"fix-it' rational approach, we can learn how to adopt a
motivational role and develop skills for helping patients change over
time.
